Before the original BMW X5 came along, big four-wheel drives tended to know their place. Yes, there were cranky one-offs like the Lamborghini LM002 and various Over finch-tuned Range Rovers that plumbed powerful engines into big sports utility vehicles, but all too often this surfeit of horsepower only served to highlight the shortcomings of a chassis derived from basic agricultural equipment. The X5 changed all that. Some initially sniffy comments that it was little more than a 5 Series Touring on stilts were meant as a barb but merely highlighted quite how good the X5 was to drive. So much so that 90 per cent of all X5s sold were specified in more focused Sport trim.



Flexible interior, Characteristic seating position

The new BMW X5 is 7.4 inches longer than its predecessor. However, the body designers have maintained the typical proportions of BMW's outstanding SAV, as well as the overall sporting character of the vehicle. The extra size only becomes apparent at first glance within the interior of the new BMW X5.

Significant ground clearance and the high, command seating position continue to characterize the unique driving experience. At the same time the interior is even more flexible than before and, for the first time, allows the integration of an optional, third row of seats. Just as with the original, the interior of the new X5 is characterized by premium flair and a wide range of features which set new standards for vehicles in this segment.

The new BMW X5 further enhances its leadership in driving dynamics. While the previous model was successful in setting and remaining the benchmark in this respect throughout its entire product cycle, BMW's drivetrain and chassis development specialists have now set the standard even higher in terms of power and performance, agility, dynamics, and ride comfort. They have achieved this while retaining the basic principles of unit-body design, independent suspension, and full-time, electronically controlled variable all-wheel drive.

Both engines for the BMW X5 have been substantially upgraded in power, performance and refinement. The chassis and suspension - which enable this new-found power and performance to be used to best effect on road, track or no road at all - is brand-new from the ground up.
Exclusive and Innovative suspension technology.

The new BMW X5 boasts a double wishbone front suspension, which is noteworthy for this type of vehicle. This optimizes tire contact on the road and makes the new X5 capable of reaching impressively high cornering forces.

The integral IV rear suspension, patented by BMW, also helps to give the new BMW X5 truly outstanding potential on the road. Through its configuration, the rear suspension is better able to separate the driving and shock-absorbing functions.  The wheel mounts and suspension subframe, as well as no less than four control arms, takes up drive and dynamic forces fed into the suspension. Lastly, soft front swing mounts on the rear suspension subframe, optimize the longitudinal suspension of the wheel guidance elements and enhance ride comfort substantially.

The new rack-and-pinion steering with a variable transmission ratio geared to the steering angle meets the requirements of different driving situations at all times. The steering helps keep the driver safely in control of his vehicle even at higher speeds, offering outstanding directional stability. In bends, on the other hand, the driver will feel more direct steering response with the steering ratio geared to the steering angle which provides a dynamic style of driving.



Active Steering and AdaptiveDrive are just Unique in the segment

The new BMW X5 is the first vehicle in its class to offer Active Steering as an option. This advanced system developed by BMW offers the right steering ratio at all speeds. Up to a speed of approximately 55 mph (90 km/h), steering behavior is more direct, meeting the requirements of sporting and active driving. Another advantage is that the driver only has to turn the steering wheel twice from lock to lock. At higher speeds, on the other hand, the Active Steering transmission is more indirect, enhancing the directional stability of the vehicle and, accordingly, driving comfort.

Active Steering, when ordered, is combined in the new BMW X5 with Servotronic for optimal power steering boost at all speeds. Active Steering can also help to stabilize the X5 should the driver experience the onset of oversteering or understeering in a bend or in particularly demanding brake maneuvers. When applying the brakes on surfaces with varying frictional coefficients (split-friction braking), for example, Active Steering precisely but discreetly countersteers to help the X5 stop in a sure straight line.

Carefully coordinated interaction of the anti-roll bars and shock absorbers by way of AdaptiveDrive, part of the Sport Package in the U.S., is equally unique in this SAV's segment. The combination of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control gives the new BMW X5 a standard of handling capability and ride quality never seen before in a vehicle of this kind. Using sensors, AdaptiveDrive constantly monitors and calculates data on the road speed of the vehicle, its steering angle, straight-line and lateral acceleration, body and wheel acceleration, as well as height levels. Then, based on this information, the system controls both the swivel motors on the anti-roll bars and the electromagnetic shock-absorber valves, controlling body roll and damping as required at all times.

Simply by pressing a button, the driver can choose either a sporting or a more comfortable basic setting of AdaptiveDrive.

Data transfer via Flex Ray is a World debut

The FlexRay high-speed data transmission system is used for the first time in the industry for fast and reliable coordination of all AdaptiveDrive functions. FlexRay has been enhanced to production standard by a consortium of development companies under the leadership of BMW. This system offers a level of data transfer capacity never seen before. The new BMW X5 is the first vehicle in the world to feature FlexRay technology.

A hybrid car with that typical BMW character requires innovative technology.

The objective to combine that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW with a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions in BMW's first full hybrid, called for the development of innovative technology offering a synthesis of the combustion engine and the electric motor.

To make this process of development as efficient as possible, the BMW Group has joined forces with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler to form the Global Hybrid Cooperation serving to develop the next generation of hybrid drive systems. These three equal partners pool their know-how and resources in the GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW Hybrid Development Center in Troy (Michigan, USA, concentrating in the process on a flexible system concept allowing each of the companies involved to integrate the particular concept, design and construction of their cars in the new technology, focusing on the specific features of each brand. Precisely this is why the technology of the two-mode active transmission created through this cooperation is part the BMW ActiveHybrid modular development system.

Optimised use of energy and superior power in every situation.

The innovative power transmission featured by BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid combines two compact, high-performance electric motors with a transmission using fixed transmission ratios. These drive systems are connected to one another by three planetary gearsets allowing a power split covering the drive forces of the combustion engine and the electric motors in two transmission ranges and thus ensuring a level of variability quite impossible on a conventional hybrid drivetrain thanks to the combination of the two drive sources able to provide optimum power and maximum efficiency under all driving conditions and power requirements from the driver.

The system referred to on account of its two operating modes as the twomode active transmission also comprises a high-performance battery, power electronics with an integrated inverter module, and the cables required. The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT electrical continuously variable transmission. The two operating modes, one of which has been optimised for low, the other for high speeds, are supplemented by fixed transmission ratios.

The two power-split ECVT sections allow the drivetrain to run at continuously variable speeds and ensure full, highly efficient hybrid functions throughout the complete operating range of the car, the innovative system in BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid thus serving to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent compared with a comparable BMW running on a combustion engine alone.

Given the two-mode system, the electric motors are furthermore very compact in their dimensions, facilitating integration into the overall vehicle as well as a minimum increase in weight, which is lower in the case of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid than with conventional hybrid cars offering comparable power.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid can be driven on electric power only, on the combustion engine alone, or with a combination of both power units. Depending on driving conditions, the electric motors may also be used for both accelerating and regenerative application of the brakes, in which case the brake forces generated when coasting and when applying the brakes flowi to the high-volt energy storage unit to provide an increase in electric power.

This energy subsequently available for further use need not be generated by the combustion engine and is therefore available virtually free of charge.

Already using this principle in a similar manner on production cars featuring Brake Energy Regeneration, BMW is able to ensure efficient energy management and maintain the battery at a high charge level. On the road, the support provided by the electric motors in this way referred to as "boosting" serves, first, to give the car incomparable spontaneity and a direct response and, second, to significantly reduce fuel consumption.


 


BMW ActiveHybrid comes in where conventional hybrid drive reaches its limit.

Conventional hybrid systems allow efficient motoring only in relatively small or medium-sized vehicles at relatively low speeds. This is because most of the power coming from the combustion engine has to be conveyed most of the time via the electrical path of the transmission and because of the use of a high level of electric power. A car with enhanced dynamics, performance and running speeds would therefore require a larger combustion engine calling for less efficient, larger and heavier electric motors.

In the power split drive mode, also referred to as the output branched concept, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator, converting some of the engine's power into electrical current subsequently fed to the battery or the second electric motor. The second electric motor then converts such power coming from the first electric motor or from the battery back into mechanical power for the output drive shaft on the transmission.

Two-mode technology varies the balance of electrical and mechanical energy on the respective paths for optimum efficiency.

A further point is that a conventional hybrid drive system does not come with fixed mechanical transmission ratios, which would serve to optimise fuel consumption. Instead, conventional hybrid drivetrains use a continuously variable transmission, with the disadvantage that the actual requirement for performance and load feedback from the car are separated from one another, thus failing to provide a dynamic driving impression.

The two-mode active transmission, by contrast, overcomes and eliminates the disadvantages of a conventional hybrid drivetrain. It reduces the share of power flowing through the electrical branch of the transmission throughout a broad range of transmission ratios. Through its power split in two transmission ranges, the two-mode active transmission therefore provides the energy of both electric motors in an ideal form tailored to current driving conditions.

BMW ActiveHybrid: the result of years of research.

The principle of the two-mode active transmission in BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid forms a significant milestone in BMW's ActiveHybrid strategy, fulfilling the demands made by a broad range of customers looking for a dynamic, economical and responsible form of motoring.

To reach this goal BMW pursues a clear-cut "Best of Hybrid" strategy enabling use of the optimum components under a modular principle within a wide range of different vehicle concepts planned for the future. Parallel to the Global Hybrid Cooperation, the BMW Group has therefore entered into yet another joint venture with DaimlerChrysler, developing components for hybrid drive in the luxury performance saloon.

BMW started to develop hybrid drive many years ago, long before the foundation of the Global Hybrid Cooperation. Indeed, BMW tested the electric drivetrain as early as in the late 1980s, for example in the BMW E1. And the BMW Group has been conducting research on hybrid technology and its various options for more than 15 years, making this technology and the results already obtained a firm part of the BMW X5 EfficientDynamics development strategy.

In the meantime the BMW Group has presented several hybrid vehicle concepts, starting with a hybrid car in 1995 based on the BMW 518i. In particular, the outstanding potential of this drive technology has been proven in the BMW X5 EfficientDynamics presented in 2003 and the BMW Concept X3 EfficientDynamics shown to the world in 2005.

Introducing BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW is proudly presenting the highest degree of maturity in hybrid technology seen so far. Indeed, this technology offers everything it takes to combine extremely efficient motoring with that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW.

The roofline flows down gently to the contour lip at the rear, finally merging into a slight upward swing perfecting the coupé line and at the same time optimising the car's streamlining.

The rear look of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is split by horizontal lines making the car look wider and emphasising its stable grip on the road.

A muscular bumper and the protective cover for the underfloor are further classic design elements characteristic of a BMW X Car. And last but not least, the proportions so typical of a coupé are borne out here in particular style typical of a BMW X Car, inter alia through the muscular and elegant shoulders.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is clearly recognisable as a BMW from every angle. All design features clearly bear out the language of BMW design, with the focus primarily on those sculptural lines so characteristic of all BMW X models.

The front, side and rear body sections flow smoothly and directly into one another, with additionally highlighting various design elements typical of the brand ranging from the BMW kidney grille through the dual round headlights with their cut contour and the powerful contour line at the side all the way to the horizontal lines at the rear.

Following the usual philosophy of a BMW X Car, the wheel arches show slightly square contours offering space for 21-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design created especially for BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid. This is indeed a brand-new rendition of such three-dimensional rims with the individual spokes showing recessed surfaces not only at the top, but also further down towards the inner sections of the wheel.

The exterior mirrors on BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid are likewise brandnew in their design, a white, shimmering row of lights standing out between the lower element finished in body colour and the upper section of the mirror cap made of aluminium. Supplementing the corona rings in the headlights so typical of BMW, these additional lights also provide a daytime light function.

The unique character of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is also borne out by the design of the rear lights where the L-shape so typical of a BMW X Car is re-interpreted in a particularly dynamic, sweeping motion. Extending far into the side panels, the rear lights also serve to emphasise the overall width of the car in its night design.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid proudly presents its unmistakable design also through truly authentic, unique features clearly visible at very first sight. Hence, through its look alone this concept car arouses the greatest expectations of the driving experience in such a Sports Activity Coupé. The unique character of this drivetrain concept is also expressed through the design of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid: Not only the door cutout strips with their blue, illuminated "BMW ActiveHybrid" marking and the strongly contrasting colour scheme combining the paintwork with the dark window graphics confirm the special status of this vehicle, but also other, truly unique and innovative design features at the back of the car.

As soon as the electric motors take over in full and provide all the drive power required, a clear signal for optimised combustion and emission ratings is proudly displayed at the back, since the underfloor protection panel made of brushed aluminium both front and rear is a moving element on BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid: So as soon as the vehicle is running entirely on electric power, the rear protection panel may be moved up to cover the two tailpipes on the exhaust system as long as they are not required for their normal purpose.

The car in the image to the left shows, according to BMW, "how the range of BMW X models the world over might be extended," but we'd rather just call it "overkill."

That said, this is BMW's Concept X6. And if the four-door monstrosity above looks like a cross between a 5-series, an X5, and a 6-series, then that's perfectly logical, because that's exactly what it is. BMW's Concept X6 is claimed to be the world's first "Sport Activity Coupe" (remember, this is the same company that gave us the X5 and then insisted that it be called a "Sports Activity Vehicle," a term no one outside of Munich uses). As you'd expect, the company is pitching it as a half-coupe, half-SUV type of vehicle.



The Concept X6 would be largely uninteresting were it not for one thing: Its all-wheel-drive system, something BMW is calling Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), foreshadows the next generation of BMW's X-drive system. The provided tech details are vague, but essentially, DPC uses a set of electronically monitored chassis and suspension sensors to help optimize torque distribution between the rear wheels. This somewhat proven approach - Mitsubishi's Active Yaw Control, as found on the Lancer Evolution X, works in fundamentally the same way - is aimed at eliminating both understeer and oversteer, and providing maximum traction at all times.

 (Essentially, think of DPC as what would happen if a mechanical all-wheel-drive system had a baby with electronic stability control, and you'll be on the right track.) BMW claims that the system provides a chassis stabilization effect in both on- and off-throttle conditions.

Unique, aesthetic look: dynamic coupé line and the typical features of a BMW X model.

The front end of BMW X6 Concept is dominated by highlights in design clearly symbolising the car's dynamic orientation to the road. From the side, in turn, the proportions are definitely elegant, the short front body overhang emphasising the dynamism of the car, the long overhang at the rear, its stretched and sleek look. The long line of the engine compartment lid merges smoothly and gently into the elegantly rising A-pillars, the greenhouse moved far to the back and the roofline tapering out clearly and consistently from the B-pillars interacting with the high window line to provide low and, indeed, almost flat window graphics.

The roofline, in turn, flows down gently to the rear spoiler, finally moving up again slightly in a small upward swing perfecting the overall line of a coupé and at the same time optimising the car's aerodynamic qualities.

The dynamically stretched side lines highlight the aesthetic effect of this concept car, with BMW X6 Concept obtaining its impressive presence clearly through the unique combination of these lines and the design elements of a BMW X car.

Apart from the high window line, the large wheel arches and the centre of gravity visibly in the middle of the car, particularly this distinctive and powerful interaction of convex and concave surfaces, of the muscular side-sills with running boards made of drilled aluminium beneath the doors and the strong underfloor protection elements front and rear also made of aluminium express all the genuine DNA of BMW X.

Consistent focus on sporting performance.

BMW X6 Concept combines the design features so typical of a BMW X model with a truly individual, aesthetic look. In its character and design, this concept car stands out clearly from BMW's highly successful SAV models, although the core features of those models provide a strong and sound foundation for the development of a unique personality in the guise of BMW X6 Concept as the Sports Activity Coupé.

With its impressively dynamic driving characteristics, the BMW X5 already excels as a true exception in its segment, and was indeed the forerunner creating the entire segment in the first place. This is the first time that a six-cylinder in-line engine has been included as part of a BMW ActiveHybrid system. The 3.0-litre petrol unit, which develops 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 400 Newton metres (295 lb-ft), represents a passport to increased driving pleasure and efficiency. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the six-cylinder engine, which has already won the international Engine of the Year Award two years in succession, comprises a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing.

The synchronous electric motor of the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid is integrated into the housing of the eight-speed automatic gearbox, saving space. The link-up between the electric motor and gearbox is controlled by a clutch and the motor's operating temperature is regulated by the combustion engine's cooling system. The electric drive system develops 40 kW/55 hp and makes 210 Newton metres (155 lb-ft) of torque available from rest. The motor is supplied with energy by a lithium-ion high-performance battery, likewise specially developed for the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid. The high-voltage battery is encased in a special high-strength housing and positioned between the wheel arches in the luggage area, providing it with optimum protection. It consists of 96 cells, has its own cooling system and offers usable energy capacity of 675 Wh. The integration of the lithium-ion high-performance battery into the luggage area reduces the load capacity of the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid to 375 litres, 145 litres lower than that of a BMW 5-Series Sedan variant powered purely by a combustion engine.

The BMW 5 ActiveHybrid has both a conventional 14-volt power supply and a high-voltage supply with an operating voltage of 317 volts. They are linked up by a voltage transformer ensuring that maximum electric energy can be used to enhance driving dynamics and comfort in any operating phase. Like the electric motor, the air conditioning compressor is also fed with power from the lithium-ion high-performance battery exclusively via the high-voltage supply. This ensures a pleasant interior climate, even when the combustion engine is switched off - i.e. when the car is at a standstill, operating purely on electric power or in coasting mode. In addition, the stationary climate control function can be used to cool the interior before the engine is started up.

Intelligently controlled hybrid technology: unprecedented precision for superior efficiency.
Up to a speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid can operate in all-electric mode for zero emissions in town. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store sufficient energy to give an all-electric driving range of up to four kilometres (approx. 2.5 miles) at an average speed of 35 km/h (22 mph).

The internal combustion engine is only started when the driver requires more power: it is then engaged automatically. The electric motor provides a "boost" function to supplement the engine when accelerating. Maximum combined power is 250 kW/340 hp, with maximum torque of 450 Newton metres. Under combined ICE/electric power, the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid delivers a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 5.9 seconds.

Hybrid-specific Auto Start-Stop function and coasting mode.
Thanks to the specially designed Hybrid Auto Start-Stop function, there are no compromises on comfort even when the vehicle is stopped in traffic for longer periods - after the internal combustion engine is shut off, the automatic climate control simply runs off the lithium-ion battery. When the driver releases the brake, the vehicle will restart on either the electric motor alone or the electric motor and the petrol engine, depending on the high-voltage battery's current charge level and on how much power the driver wants.

Another innovation being pioneered in the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid further improves efficiency by shutting the internal combustion engine down not only when the vehicle is stationary, or when driving in town, but also on overrun. In the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid, this coasting mode is available at any speed up to 160 km/h (100 mph). Coasting mode switches off the petrol engine and disconnects it from the drive shaft. From this point on, the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid continues moving soundlessly, with zero emissions and with no engine braking effect. The potential efficiency improvements are further enhanced by tyres with reduced rolling resistance. In coasting mode too, as with all-electric mode for urban driving, all safety and comfort functions remain fully operational.

Intelligent energy management with proactive analysis of the driving situation.
The advanced power electronics coordinate the operation of the internal combustion engine and electric motor with precise reference to the driving situation. For even more efficient energy management in the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid, this functionality has been extended to include proactive analysis of the driving situation. To support this, the power electronics are integrated with the standard-fitted Professional navigation system, which means they can access and analyse data indicating an upcoming change in external conditions or driver requirements at a very early stage. Based on this analysis, the vehicle can be prepared in advance for the relevant requirements so that all powertrain systems and the on-board electronics are managed appropriately and in such a way as to make the most efficient possible use of the available energy.

Factors that may cause a change in powertrain operating strategy include the topography of the route and speed limits. For example, if the system knows that a hilly stretch is coming up soon, the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid can invest all the high-voltage battery's electrical energy in providing supplementary driving power, since the battery will be recharged "at no cost" during the subsequent descent. On longer downhill sections the electric motor's generator function, too, can be enlisted to recharge the high-voltage battery with no loss of speed. The operating strategy can also be managed so as to ensure that the high-voltage battery is as fully charged as possible when nearing the end of the journey, thereby increasing the electric driving range on the "last lap".

The operating status of the powertrain components is shown in intuitive, model-specific displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display of the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid. As well as the energy flow and energy recuperation display, these include a further gauge next to the rev counter which shows the boost effect being provided by the electric motor during acceleration. A display in the iDrive interface provides a variety of information - for example on the lithium-ion high-voltage battery's current charge level and the power-sharing between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor in the course of a journey.

The chassis specifications of the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid include a double-wishbone front axle and integral rear axle, electromechanical power steering including the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assist function, a high-performance brake system and 17-inch alloy wheels. Dynamic Damper Control, featuring electronically controlled damping, is optionally available. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, which stabilises the vehicle by applying braking pressure and reducing engine power, also incorporates functions such as Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist, Fading Compensation, a Dry Braking function and Start-Off Assistant.

The hybrid-specific safety features, which protect the lithium-ion high-voltage battery and the power electronics, are integrated in the BMW 5-Series' elaborate integrated active and passive safety concept. In a collision, high-strength structural components and large deformation zones help to keep impact forces away from the passenger cell and also from the hybrid drive components. Other standard safety systems on the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid include front and side airbags, side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel belts on all seats, belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners on the front seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear.

In the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid, too, the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch offers not only Sport+, Sport and Comfort set-ups (as well as Comfort+ mode if the optional Dynamic Damper Control is specified), but also ECO PRO mode. The latter supports a particularly relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style, and makes more frequent use of all-electric mode. As an alternative to the standard-fitted automatic transmission, a sports automatic with faster shift times is optionally available.
BMW ConnectedDrive systems optionally available for the BMW 5 ActiveHybrid include Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera, Surround View, Adaptive Headlights, High-Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info, BMW Parking Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and the BMW Head-Up Display. Innovative technologies also allow in-car integration of the Apple iPhone, other smartphones and music players, and use of the Real-Time Traffic Information and Apps functions.

To further enhance comfort and individuality, the standard-specification 4-zone automatic climate control and navigation system Professional can be supplemented by options such as active seats, active seat ventilation, Comfort Access, the Smart Opener for the tailgate, the Soft Close Automatic function for the doors, a power-operated glass roof and high-end audio and rear entertainment systems.
